Unikool.it stories. The story of Michelle Lin: contemporary colours, cultures and stories from Asia.
I am Michelle Lin, a fashion designer based in Hong Kong. I just finished my study in BA (Hons) Fashion Design at Nottingham Trent University jointly offered by Hong Kong Design Institute. In 2015, I have won the Best Print and Best Contemporary award in the Hong Kong Design Institute Graduation Show with Distortion, aka my higher diploma fashion collection.
The surrealistic alteration of the original shape is the concept of this collection. The main concept is the distortion of the Face, with a special focus on human faces. Facial lines naturally change with human emotions, hence providing a broad range of line variations. The collection is thoroughly wearable, with prints and textures being the main design features. Regarding the colors selection, the use of primary colours such as red, blue and yellow allows the prints to be exceptionally eye-catching. To create the desired 3D effect I printed the design patterns on neoprene, organza and other fabrics of high transparency. Distortions are achieved through dividing each face into different fragments and then re-joining them together. The result is a human face, though surrealistically distorted, still retains a human factor that is attractive, energetic and humane.
Using the same concept of Distortion, I have won several awards luckily.
I am the second-runner up of Society of Dyers and Colourists competition 2015 which is an international fashion textile competition. Since my works are creative and innovative, I have won the young talent award 2015 from Hong Kong Fashion Designer Association, I am also a member of them. I also joined the young designer talent award which allows all kind of designers (such as graphic, architecture, illustration design) to participate, I have won the young designer talent special mentioned award 2015.
To continue my work, I designed a brand new degree fashion collection which is called When I was young menswear collection. This one is inspired by the childhood of Hong Kong children. Hong Kong people are stressed by their life: this collection’s aim is express the beautiful memories in young generation and add some positive colours in their life. Prints include Hong Kong traditional snacks, games and children’s homework, which represent their childhood. I would like to create playful and delighted moods through the colour blocking, silhouette and fabrication. The theme inspired me to develop prints, or even unique cutting, for the S/S 2016 When I was young men’s collection.
In 2016 I have won the young designer talent special mentioned award again. Also, I am so glad to be the finalist of Hong Kong young designer contest 2016, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. In July, I set up my brand with my business partner, I called it Co1Sam1, and it sells only accessories. I have also joined the Design Bazaar in Hong Kong to sell my products.
Currently I am working as a fashion designer in a womenswear fashion brand in Hong Kong. As I am busy at work now, I don’t have much time to manage my brand now. But I think I will set up a fashion label later, as I gain more experience. I think my future business partner should have experience in the fashion business, be able to manage the marketing problems, effectively communicate with clients, find business opportunities and manage the finances.
I would like to position my brand in a high-street unconventional casual wear. So I think will need an investor too, to help me set this up. But right now I need more reputation to continue my fashion design career.
The hardest part being a fashion designer, I think, is keeping in balance design and marketing. Sometimes I design extremely eye-catching clothes (using too shocking colors), and maybe customers wouldn’t buy them. So I need to create less eye-catching designs and add some tricky details.
